Examinations

Part 3

Part 3 is the test of Instructional Ability and is held at a DSA authorised test centre with a DSA examiner. The test requires delegates to complete 2 phases conducted through two half-an-hour driving lessons on subjects chosen by the examiner.

The phases of the test are:

  • Phase 1 - where the examiner will take on the role of a beginner or partly trained driver
  • Phase 2 - where the examiner will take on the role of a trained or full licence holder (FLH) driver

During the test the examiner will take on the role of a learner / FLH driver and will assess the instructional ability of each delegate. Delegates will need to demonstrate:

  • Effective communication skills
  • Levels of instruction
  • Core competency

Within the core competency requirement there are three areas that each delegate will need to be familiar with:

  • Fault identification
  • Fault analysis
  • Remedial action

Each exam is graded between 1 - 6. To pass the exam, the delegate will need to achieve a minimum of a Grade 4 - this applies to both phases (i.e. Phase 1 and Phase 2).
